Abstract

The stability of the Humanti caverns, Napo province, Ecuador, was evaluated by means of geomechanical classifications: Bieniawski's RMR and Barton's Q index, as well as kinematic analysis techniques. The geomechanical classifications determine the quality of the rock mass by assigning a score to determine its overall stability and generate support recommendations. The results of four geomechanical stations studied showed that the caverns present a regular rock
quality, which is unstable and requires support. On the other hand, the kinematic analysis allowed determining the failure modes that are controlled by the structure of the rock mass, through this technique a total of fifteen unstable wedges in the roof were identified.

Slendy Lolita Yépez, Universidad Regional Amazónica IKIAM

Slendy Yépez Cabrera is a graduate of the Geosciences Engineering program at the Universidad Regional Amazónica Ikiam. She has collaborated in projects such as the creation of the new risk management agenda for the Archidona canton and the Napo Sumaco Geopark. He has also participated as a speaker at the First Symposium for the International Year of Caves and Karst organized by the Aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark Napo Sumaco Geopark. His areas of interest include geotechnics, soil management and mining.

Anderson D. Ocampos, Geo Prospecting

Anderson D. Ocampos obtained a degree in Geosciences Engineering at the Universidad Regional Amazónica Ikiam. He has participated in several research projects such as: "Analysis of Rock Slope Stability in a section of the Tena - Baeza road, Sub-Andean Region of Ecuador", Natural Cave Guide of Napo province and Study of Net Primary Productivity in the Colonso-Chalupas Reserve. He has co-authored a scientific article on the Application of a Methodology for the Evaluation of Geotourism Potential in Caves of Napo Province. His main research interests are Geotechnics applied to Civil Engineering Works and Geological Exploration. He is currently developing a Geological Exploration project within the urban perimeter of the city of Tena and provides Geotechnical Assistance in the company Geo Prospecting.

Edgar Chulde, Servicio Nacional de Gestión de Riesgos y Emergencias

Edgar Chulde, Servicio Nacional de  Gestión de Riesgos y Emergencias. Ingeniero Geólogo graduado en la Escuela Politecnica Nacional, posee experiencia en el mapeo y en el estudio de peligros geológicos. Coautor de las hojas geológicas La Carolina y Loja a escala 1: 50000 y 1: 100000 publicadas por el Instituto Nacional de Investigación Geológica, Minera, Metalúrgica en el año 2016; ha participado como expositor en las VII Jornadas de Ciencias de la Tierra, EPN en 2017 donde presentó su trabajo Caracterización geoquímica y petrogenética de los gabros hornbléndicos expuestos en La Carolina (Guallupe). En la actualidad, se desempeña como geólogo del Servicio Nacional de Gestión de Riesgos y Emergencias con enfoque en la evaluación de riesgos geológicos. Además, presta sus servicios profesionales como consultor en cartografía geológica con énfasis en la tectónica y geología regional.

Jorge Espin, Universidad Regional Amazónica IKIAM

Professor of Geosciences Engineering at the Universidad Regional Amazónica Ikiam, and current director of the geophysics and geotechnical research group. He is a consultant and trainer in applied geology and drilling machines in Geoprospecting. His experience has been acquired in companies dedicated to the construction of tunnels, dams and foundations, as well as in the geological field in the exploration of mineral resources and hydrogeology.
